Registering a Death
Every death must be registered. Below you’ll find what you’ll need, who can register the death, and contact details for local Registry Offices.
Who May Register:
- A relative of the deceased
- A person present at death
- A person arranging the funeral (not the Funeral Director)
- In certain circumstances, others such as care home administrators
Information & Documents for the Registrar
You'll need the following information:
- Forename(s) and surname
- Date and place of death
- Date and place of birth (town and county)
- Occupation or previous occupation
- Usual address
- Spouse’s date of birth (if married)
- NHS number (take Medical Card if available)
- Pension or allowance details (if applicable)
Bring to your appointment:
- Birth and/or marriage certificates
- Letter from DWP or document with National Insurance number
